Anyone But You Review- Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are full of chemistry in this latest rom-com

Anyone But You is the newest rom-com of 2023, from director Will Gluck and loosely based on the Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing; starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell.

The film follows Bea (Sydney Sweeney) a law student who is unsure whether she wants to be a lawyer and Ben (Glen Powell) a finance man who likes to act like a f-boy and have emotional barriers up. These two meet in a coffee shop, a stereotypical rom-com meet cute; they hit it off straight away and have a romantic day and night together opening up to each other about things they haven't even told some of their closest friends. In the morning Bea gets nervous and leaves before Ben wakes up, but she quickly returns regretting her decision; however, she overhears Ben talking badly about her to his friend and leaves. Fast forward to months later when the two cross paths again as it turns out Ben's friend Claudia (Alexandra Shipp) is dating Bea's sister Halle (Hadley Robinson) and they meet again a year later for Claudia and Halle's wedding in Australia.

Romantic comedies used to be a very popular genre in the early 2000s, but recently it started seeming like they were a dying genre, and in my opinion there aren't many recent films that come to mind that aren't painfully cringey to watch. The only other romantic comedy from recent years that I actually enjoyed was Set It Up (2018) also starring Glen Powell alongside Zoey Deutch. But Anyone But You is one of the best rom-coms I have seen in a while, it is genuinely hilarious and had me and my friends cry laughing at moments in the cinema.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are a perfect pairing, they have amazing chemistry and tension on screen, playing the stereotypical enemies to lovers trope brilliantly. The setting of Sydney, Australia was a beautiful choice of location as well which allows the film to feel refreshing and away from the usual New York City romance, and adds some hilarious Australian humour. Anyone But You is a heartwarming film, and is overall a charming, enjoyable watch. Yes it has the usual rom com stereotypes but sometimes all you want from a rom com is the cliches with a refreshing portrayal, and I think this film does that. If you want a rom-com that brings you back to the early 2000s then this film is for you, it will have you laughing and smiling throughout, and will also have you belting Natasha Bedingfield's song Unwritten the whole way home from the cinema!
