Blink Twice Review- Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut is a sharp-witted and chilling thriller

Blink Twice is a psychological thriller which is co-wrote by Zoë Kravitz and her directorial debut. It stars Naomi Ackie, Channing Tatum, Alia Shawkat and Adria Arjona.

The film follows Frida (Naomi Ackie) and Jess (Alia Shawkat) who are two waitresses working at an event held for tech CEO Slater King (Channing Tatum). When the billionaire CEO invites them both to his own private island, they jump at the chance to get away and have a well needed vacation. At first they are having the time of their life, drinking glasses after glasses of champagne, and dancing their worries away every night whilst on drugs. However, they slowly start to realise that they have been experiencing mysterious moments of memory loss and that there may be something else sinister going on.

For Kravtiz's first film she has really shown herself as a director with big ideas and visions. The writing in this film is very sharp-witted and entertaining, with humour added throughout to balance from the darker and more violent scenes. The use of colour is amazing in this film, with the bright, toxic yellows and blood-reds adding a sense of fear throughout this film; and the use of music is also really thrilling and adds to the intensity of the scenes. Naomi Ackie is incredible as the clumsy waitress who is excited to be noticed for once, and Channing Tatum perfectly portrays a charming, flirtatious billionaire whilst also bringing an uneasy atmosphere to his scenes.

At moments the film is repetitive with many shots of them lounging by the pool smoking weed, and foreshadowing the danger that is to occur that at some moments did feel like it was being dragged out a little too much. But I think it was worth it towards the end when the twist is revealed and the final act begins. The final act picks up the pace of the film, and has audiences supporting the girl power that is preached throughout the film.

Blink Twice is an interesting psychological thriller, Kravtiz is proving herself as a skilled writer and director. It is an entertaining and enjoyable film which at moments may seem clunky with all the different messages Kravitz is trying to feed into the narrative, but overall I found the film wickedly funny and thrilling; and I am looking forward to seeing what Kravitz creates next.
