Dune: Part Two Review- the sci-fi sequel is a breathtaking, immersive masterpiece

Denis Villeneuve returns with his second film in the Dune universe. With his 2021 film Dune, he only adapted half of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune, and now Villeneuve continues on the story of Paul Atreides.

Dune: Part Two continues on from where the first film left off. House Atreides has fallen, and Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) are now living with the Fremen for sanctuary. We follow Paul as he leads the Fremen people of Arrakis to wage a war against the Harkonnen house. Paul becomes a warrior and a leader, who is believed by the Fremen people (especially their leader Stilgar played by Javier Bardem) to be the Lisan Al Gaib, a prophet who will lead the Fremen to freedom. Paul connects and falls in love with Chani (Zendaya), a warrior of the Fremen people who teaches him the ways of the desert. We are also introduced to new characters in this sequel, there is a new Harkonnen villain, Feyd-Rautha (Austin Butler) who is the psychotic nephew of Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard). Florence Pugh also joins the cast playing Princess Irulan, daughter of the Emperor (Christopher Walken).

The cinematography is breathtaking, Villeneuve and cinematographer Greig Fraser create an immersive experience that draws audiences into the film. The visuals are beautiful, with shots of the vast desert, sandworms, the stunning sunsets, and the black and white scenes when we are on the Harkonnen's planet. All the fight scenes were choreographed perfectly and accompanied with the visuals and lighting were also beautiful, specifically a fight scene between Paul and Feyd-Rautha. Hanz Zimmer accompanies the visuals with his spectacular score for the film, he adds moments of emotions to the more intimate scenes between characters; and loud intense scores to accompany the edge of your seat, tense war scenes.

The acting in this film is brilliant, everyone put their all into their roles and gave amazing performances. Timothée Chalamet was incredible as Paul, he is able to portray the rise of Paul's power alongside the decline in his morals perfectly. In my opinion his performance was Oscar worthy, when watching this film you feel his performance and the arc of his character. He is emotional in intimate scenes with Zendaya, whilst also giving powerful speeches to the Fremen to get them to follow him blindly into battle. Zendaya has a much bigger role than the first film, she is the moral centre of this film. Her character adds grounding in between the huge fight scenes, but she is also a great female character who stands up for what she believes in. Zendaya is able to convey such emotion in her scenes, even when she isn't speaking her eye contact and facial expressions are perfect. Austin Butler is incredible as Feyd-Rautha, every time Butler is in a scene it evokes fear in the audience. Even though he does not have much screen time he commands every scene he is in with his psychotic ink stained smile as he slashes throats and his voice perfectly matching Stellan Skarsgard's performance as the Baron.

Dune: Part Two is a monumental achievement in science fiction filmmaking, it is an immersive cinematic experience. Denis is able to create a huge world with many different characters and storylines but is still able to keep the audience connected to the characters and each of their journeys. If you enjoyed the first Dune film you will love this one, the first film introduced you to the characters but this film is a brilliant expansion to the world and the characters. Denis Villeneuve has made a big step in blockbuster science fiction films and all I can say is he needs to hurry up and create Dune Messiah!
