A multiverse of madness that will make you laugh, cry and think
To simplify this confusing plot without giving away any spoilers this comedy, drama, science-fiction film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as "Daniels") follows Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) a Chinese-American woman who is the co-owner of a laundromat with husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) who are being audited by an angry tax officer (Jamie Lee Curtis) working for the IRS. Evelyn goes through many struggles at home, she has a tense relationship with her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) as they argue about hiding Joy's sexuality from her grandfather Gong Gong (James Hong) because of 'generational differences'. Evelyn also faces a strained relationship with her husband, and the boring life of owning a laundromat, but one day she is faced by the craziness of the multiverse and the chance to prove what she can do and save the parallel universes.
This indie film distributed by A24 and having a budget of $25 million is set to make over $50 million by the end of its ninth week in cinemas, this means that it is on route to becoming the company's highest-grossing movie at domestic box office! When I watched this film in cinemas I was able to see what is making it such a success with critics and the public. I think that the success of this film is the leap that the directors chose to do by creating a crazy, all over the place film by jumping through different universes but still being able to feel grounded and relatable to everyone watching the film. Everyone wonders where they would end up if they chose a different path in life and this film beautifully shows what we all dream about.
At first this film seems like a normal family drama but "Daniels" used their creative ambitions and ideas to create a batshit crazy film that still was able to bring emotions to a spectacular visual film. "Daniels" mix the genres beautifully by having dark comedic gags and punchlines throughout the film, whilst also having beautifully shot action sequences and heartfelt moments between characters. Everything Everywhere All at Once, even though is a science-fiction film about the limitless ideas of the multiverse it is also about mother and daughter relationships, marriage, coming out, and generational gaps. This sci-fi spectacle is a beautifully made film filled with emotions about family, and cherishing the life that we have despite how small we are in our universe, or universes!
