The 90s tornado blockbuster returns 30 years later with bigger destruction and slow burn romance between Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell.
Twisters is a sequel to the 1996 disaster film Twister about tornadoes sweeping across Oklahoma, this time directed by Lee Isaac Chung and with bigger and more destructive tornadoes than before. We follow Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), she is a smart and brilliant tornado researcher who chases them in Oklahoma, Kate has an amazing sixth sense about knowing where these tornadoes are going to appear. Kate struggles with guilt over a tragic event that took place 5 years ago when her and her friends were chasing a tornado for their science project and things did not go smoothly like they hoped. 5 years later Kate now lives in New York but the tornado disasters in Oklahoma have gotten more frequent and deadly, she returns back home to help her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) collect data on these freak events. However, they are not the only ones chasing these tornadoes, there is also cowboy tornado wrangler Tyler (Glen Powell) who is famous for filming himself and his team chasing tornadoes and doing dangerous stunts and tricks for millions of views and for the thrill.
Twisters is a fun, big summer movie, it has big set pieces with long intense scenes of them chasing tornadoes and the destruction that unfolds when a tornado hits a nearby town. Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones' chemistry is really good, and their connection really drives the story. They have a slow burn romance as at the beginning Kate and Tyler start off annoyed with each other due to their different approaches to chasing tornadoes, Kate wanting to do it safely, whereas Tyler lives life dangerously on the edge. But the film really delivers on the action with the huge tornadoes destroying peoples homes so quickly with no warning, as an audience we are hooked to the action watching Tyler and Kate try save a town from complete destruction. The film also floursishes with the visuals, the cinematography cuts from beautiful green lands with peaceful blue skies suddenly to dark grey clouds enveloping over the lands in an instant.
If you are wanting a fun filled blockbuster film then Twisters is for you, it is entertaining with its writing (can be cringey at times), and includes many big disaster scenes. There is a lack of character depth which would have added more emotion to the film but as a summer blockbuster it makes up for it with its fun filled action scenes and accompanied by a brilliant soundtrack full of enjoyable country songs.
